Joseph Campbell, author of The Hero with a Thousand Faces, a scholar who achieved legendary status as an explicator of myths, is reverently profiled in this documentary that encompasses his long life and career. During his childhood in New York City, Campbell was taken to see "Buffalo Bill" Cody's Wild West Show at Madison Square Garden. Young Campbell was fascinated by the Native Americans in Cody's performing troupe and eventually became obsessed with mythology. As he came to realize that myths worldwide had the same underpinnings, he also discovered his life's work. This documentary mentions Campbell's affinity for the writings of James Joyce and Carl Jung, and there is ample footage of Campbell, casual in flannel shirts, giving lectures salted with references to Buddhism, Christianity, classical mythology, St. Augustine, and the rituals of plains Indians. In later life, Campbell is seen being honored at a banquet at which George Lucas rises to give him credit for helping to inspire the writing of Star Wars. After Campbell's death in 1987, heated controversies arose about his work, but this documentary is an overwhelmingly positive look at his writings, lectures, and personality. --Robert J. McNamara

Initiation ceremony - Entered Apprentice

W. M. (disposing of such other business as may lawfully come before the Lodge.)--Brethren, if there is no further business before this Lodge of Master Masons, we will proceed to close the same, and open an Entered Apprentices' Lodge, for the purpose of initiation.

Here Lodges differ, in the mode of lowering from a Masters' to an Entered Apprentices' Lodge. Some close entirely, and open on the First; but we will adopt a short way, that Lodges have at the present day.

W. M.--Brother Senior Warden, are you sure all present are Entered Apprentice Masons?

S. W.--I am sure, Worshipful, all present are Entered Apprentice Masons.

W. M.--If you are sure all present are Entered Apprentice Masons, you will have them come to order as such, reserving yourself for the last.

S. W. (gives three raps with his gavel, all rise to their feet.)--Brethren, you will come to order as Entered Apprentice Masons.

The members place their hands in the position of a duegard of an Entered Apprentice. (See Plate 1, page 16.) When the Master makes "the sign, by drawing his hand across his throat, all follow suit; Worshipful then makes one rap with the gavel, Senior Warden one, and the Junior Warden one.

W. M.--I now declare this Lodge of Master Masons closed, and an Entered Apprentice in its stead. Brother Junior Deacon, inform the Tyler; Brother Senior Deacon, attend at the altar (which is placing both points of the compasses under the square). (Worshipful Master gives one rap, which seats the whole Lodge.) Brother Junior Deacon, you will take with you the necessary assistants (the two Stewards), repair to the ante-room, where there is a candidate in waiting (Mr. Gabe, for the First Degree in Masonry), and, when duly prepared, you will make it known by the usual sign (one rap).

The Junior Deacon and his assistants retire to the ante-room, but before they leave the Lodge-room they step to the altar, and Blake the sign of the First Degree to the Master. It is the duty of the Secretary to go out into the ante-room with them, and

before the candidate is required to strip, the Secretary gets his assent to the following interrogations, viz. (Monitorial):--

Do you seriously declare, upon your honor, that, unbiassed by friends, and uninfluenced by mercenary motives, you freely and voluntarily offer yourself a candidate for the mysteries of Masonry?

Yes (or, I do).

Do you seriously declare, upon your honor, that you are prompted to solicit the privileges of Masonry by a favorable opinion of the institution, a desire for knowledge, and a sincere wish of being serviceable to your fellow-creatures?

Yes.

Do you seriously declare, upon your honor, that you will con-form to all the ancient established usages of the Order?

Yes.

The Secretary returns to the Lodge, and reports that the candidate has given his assent to the interrogations.

The candidate is now requested to strip.

J. D.--Mr. Gabe, you will take oft your coat, shoes, and stockings, also your vest and cravat; and now your pantaloons; here is a pair of drawers for you. You will now slip your left arm out of your shirt-sleeve, and put it through the bosom of your shirt, that your arm and breast may be naked. The Deacon now ties a handkerchief or hoodwink over his eyes, places a slipper on his right foot, and after-wards puts a rope, called a cable-tow, once round his neck, letting it drag behind. 1

The figure is a representation of the candidate duly and truly prepared for the First Degree in Masonry.

The Junior Deacon now takes the candidate by the arm and leads him forward to the door of the Lodge, and gives three distinct knocks, when the Senior Deacon. on the inside, rises to his feet, makes the sign of an Entered Apprentice to the Master, and says:

S. D.--Worshipful Master, there is an alarm at the inner door of our Lodge. W. M.--You will attend to the alarm,

and ascertain the cause. (The Deacon repairs to the door, gives three distinct knocks, and then opens it.)

S. D.--Who comes here?

J. D. (who always responds for the candidate.)--Mr. Peter Gabe, who has long been in darkness, and now seeks to be brought to light, and to receive a part in the rights and benefits of this worshipful Lodge, erected to God, and dedicated to the holy Sts. John, as all brothers and fellows have clone before.

S. D.--Mr. Gabe, is it of your own free-will and accord?

Mr. G.--It is.

S. D.--Brother Junior Deacon, is he worthy, and well qualified?

J. D.--He is.

S. D.--Duly and truly prepared?

J. D.--He is.

S. D.--Of lawful age, and properly vouched for?

J. D.--He is.

S. D.--By what further right or benefit does he expect to gain admission?

J. D.--By being a man, free born, of good repute, and well recommended.

S. D.--Is he such?

J. D.--He is.

S. D.--Since he is in possession of all these necessary qualifications, you will wait with patience until the Worshipful Master is informed of his request, and his answer returned.

Deacon closes the door and repairs to the altar before the Worshipful Master, raps once on the floor with his rod, which is

responded to by the Master with his gavel, when the same thing is passed through with as at the door, and the Master says:

W. M.--Let him enter, and be received in due form.

The Senior Deacon takes the compasses from off the altar, re-pairs to the door, opens it, and says:

S. D.--Let him enter, and be received in due form.

Senior Deacon steps back, while the Junior Deacon, with candidate, enters the Lodge, followed by the two Stewards. As they advance they are stopped by the Senior Deacon, who presents one point of the compasses to the candidate's naked left breast, and says:

S. D.--Mr. Gabe, on entering this Lodge for the first time, I receive you on the point of a sharp instrument pressing your naked left breast, which is to teach you, as it is a torture to your flesh, so should the recollection of it ever be to your mind and conscience, should you attempt to reveal the secrets of Masonry unlawfully.

The Junior Deacon now leaves the candidate in the hands of the Senior Deacon, and takes his seat at the right hand of the Senior Warden in the west; while the Senior Deacon, followed by the two Stewards, proceeds to travel once regularly around the Lodge-room, as follows, viz.: Senior Deacon takes the candidate by the right arm, advances a step or two, when the Master gives one rap with his gavel. (Deacon and candidate stop.)

W. M.--Let no one enter on so important a duty without first invoking the blessing of the Deity. Brother Senior Deacon, you will conduct the candidate to the centre of the Lodge, and cause him to kneel for the benefit of prayer.

S. D.--Mr. Gabe, you will kneel. (Candidate kneels.)

Worshipful Master now leaves his seat in the east, approaches candidate, kneels by his side, and repeats the following prayer, viz.:--

W. M.--Vouchsafe Thine aid, Almighty Father of the Universe, to this our present convention; and grant that this candidate for Masonry may dedicate and devote his life to Thy service, and become a true and faithful brother among us! Endue him with a competency of Thy divine wisdom, that, by the secrets of our art, he may be better enabled to display the beauties of brotherly love, relief, and truth, to the honor of Thy Holy Name. Amen.

Responded to by all, "So mote it be."

W. M. (rising to his feet, taking candidate by the right hand, placing his left on his head.)--Mr. "Gabe" (sometimes Masters say, "Stranger!"), in whom do you put your trust?

Candidate (prompted.)--In God. 1

W. M.--Since in God you put your trust, your faith is well founded. Arise (assists candidate to rise), follow your conductor and fear no danger.

The Master retires to his seat in the east, and while the conductor (S. D.) is attending the candidate once around the Lodge-room, he repeats the following passage:--

"Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" &c., &c. (See opening, or Monitor's.) The reading is so timed as to be concluded when they have passed once around the Lodge-room to the Junior Warden's station in the south; as they pass each 1

officer's station, east, south, and west, they give one sound with their gavels, viz.: first the Master, one (•): J. W., one (•); S. W., one (•); which has a good effect on the candidate, the sounds being near his ears as he passes by (his conductor generally passing close up). Having passed once around the Lodge, they halt at the Junior Warden's station in the south.

J. W. (gives one rap; conductor one.)--Who comes here?

Conductor (S. D.)--Mr. Peter Gabe. who has long been in darkness, and now seeks to be brought to light, and to receive a part in the rights and benefits of this Worshipful Lodge, erected to God, and dedicated to the holy St. John, as all brothers and fellows have done before.

J. W.--Mr. Gabe, is it of your own free will and accord?

Mr. Gabe--It is.

J. W.--Brother Senior Deacon, is he worthy and well qualified? S. D.--He is.

Senior Warden, disposing of him in the same manner as the Junior Warden, suffers him to pass on to the Worshipful Master in the east, who makes the same inquiries as did the Wardens in the south and west, after which the Master says:

W. M.--From whence come you, and whither are you travelling?

S. D.--From the west, and travelling toward the east.

W. M.--Why leave you the west and travel toward the east?

S. D.--In search of light.

W. M.--Since light is the object of your search, you will reconduct the candidate, and place him in charge of the Senior Warden in the west, with my orders that he teach this candidate to approach the east, the place of light, by advancing with one upright, regular step to the first stop, the heel of his right placed in the hollow of his left foot, his body erect at the altar (see Fig. 14), before the Worshipful Master in the east.

Senior Deacon conducts candidate back to the Senior Warden in the west, and says:

S. D.--Brother Senior Warden, it is the orders of the Worshipful Master, that you teach this candidate to approach the east, the place of light, by advancing on one regular upright step to the first stop; the heel of his right foot in the hollow of his left (see Fig. 14, p. 93), his body erect at the altar before the Worshipful Master in the east.

Senior Warden leaves his seat, comes down to the candidate, faces him towards the Worshipful Master, and requests him to step off with his left foot, bringing the heel of his right in the hollow of his left (see step 1, Fig. 14, page 93--before the candidate is requested to do this, he is led by the Warden within one pace of the altar). Senior Warden reports to the Worshipful Master.

S. W.--The candidate is in order, and awaits your further will and pleasure.

The Master now leaves his seat in the east, and, approaching (in front of the altar) the candidate, says:

W. M.--Mr. Gabe, before you can be permitted to advance any farther in Masonry, it becomes my duty to inform you, that you must take upon yourself a solemn oath or obligation, appertaining to this degree, which I, as Master of this Lodge, assure you will not materially interfere with the duty that you owe to your God, yourself, family, country, or neighbor. Are you willing to take such an oath?

Candidate--I am.

W. M.--Brother Senior Warden, you will place the candidate in due form, which is by kneeling on his naked left knee, his right forming the angle of a square, his left hand supporting the Holy Bible, square, and compasses, his right hand resting thereon.

The Warden now places, or causes the candidate to be placed, in the position commanded by the Worshipful Master, as shown in Figure 8.

W. M.--Mr. Gabe, you are now in position for taking upon

yourself the solemn oath of an Entered Apprentice Mason, and, if you have no objections still, you will say I, and repeat your name after me.

Master gives one rap with his gavel which is the signal for all present to assemble around the altar.

OBLIGATION.

I, Peter Gabe, of my own free will and accord, in the presence of Almighty God, and this Worshipful Lodge, erected to Him, and dedicated to the holy Sts. John, 1 do hereby and hereon (Master presses his gavel on candidate's knuckles) most solemnly and sincerely promise and swear, that I will always hail, 2 ever conceal, and never reveal, any of the arts, parts, or points of the hidden mysteries of Ancient Free Masonry, which may have been, or hereafter shall be, at this time, or any future period, communicated to me, as such, to any person or persons whomsoever, except it be to a true and lawful brother Mason, or in a regularly constituted Lodge of Masons; nor unto him or them until, by strict trial, due examination, or lawful information, I shall have found him, or them, as lawfully entitled to the same as I am myself. I furthermore promise and swear that I will not print, paint, stamp, stain, cut, carve, mark, or engrave them, or cause the same to be done, on any thing movable or immovable, capable of receiving the least impression of a word, syllable, letter, or character, whereby the same may become legible or intelligible to any person under the canopy of heaven, and the secrets of Masonry thereby unlawfully obtained through my unworthiness.

All this I most solemnly, sincerely promise and swear, with a firm and steadfast resolution to perform the same, without any mental reservation or secret evasion of mind whatever, binding

myself under no less penalty than that of having my throat cut across, 1 my tongue torn out by its roots, and my body buried in the rough sands of the sea, at low-water mark, 2 where the tide ebbs and flows twice in twenty-four hours, should I ever knowingly violate this my Entered Apprentice obligation. So help me God, and keep me steadfast in the due performance of the same.

W. M.--In token of your sincerity, you will now detach your hands, and kiss the book on which your hands rest, which is the Holy Bible.

After the candidate has kissed the Bible, he is asked by the Master:

W. M.--In your present condition, what do you most desire? Candidate (prompted.)--Light

Declaraţia Universală a Drepturilor Omului

Mişcarea Francmasonică Universală incită pe fiecare cetăţean al lumii să susţină cât mai activ respectarea peste tot în lume a Drepturilor Fundamentale ale Omului exprimate foarte elocvent în Declaraţia Universală a Drepturilor Omului Adoptată de Adunarea Generală a Organizaţiei Naţiunilor Unite la 10 septembrie 1948 al cărei conţinut îl redăm în continuare:

Preambul

Considerând că recunoaşterea demnităţii inerente tuturor membrilor familiei umane şi a drepturilor lor egale şi inalienabile constituie fundamentul libertăţii, dreptăţii şi păcii în lume,

Considerând că ignorarea şi dispreţuirea drepturilor omului au dus la acte de barbarie care au revoltat conştiinţa omenirii şi că realizarea unei lumi în care fiinţele umane se vor bucura de libertatea cuvântului şi a convingerilor şi vor fi eliberate de teamă şi lăcomie a fost proclamată drept cea mai înaltă aspiraţie a oamenilor,

Considerând că este esenţial ca drepturile omului sa fie ocrotite de autoritatea legii pentru ca omul să nu fie silit să recurgă, ca ultimă soluţie, la revolta împotriva tiraniei şi asupririi,

Considerând că este esenţial a se încuraja dezvoltarea relaţiilor prieteneşti între naţiuni,

Considerând că în Cartă popoarele Organizaţiei Naţiunilor Unite au proclamat din nou credinţa lor în drepturile fundamentale ale omului, în demnitatea şi în valoarea persoanei umane şi în drepturi egale pentru bărbaţi şi femei, şi că au hotărât să favorizeze progresul social şi îmbunătăţirea condiţiilor de viaţă în cadrul unei libertăţi mai mari,

Considerând că Statele Membre s-au angajat să realizeze în colaborare cu Organizaţia Naţiunilor Unite promovarea respectul universal pentru respectarea drepturilor omului şi libertăţilor lui fundamentale,

Considerând că simpla înţelegere a acestor drepturi şi libertăţi este de cea mai mare importanţă pentru realizarea deplină a acestui angajament,


ADUNAREA GENERALĂ

proclamă prezenta DECLARAŢIE UNIVERSALĂ A DREPTURILOR OMULUI, ca standard comun de atins de către toate popoarele şi toate naţiunile, cu scopul ca toate persoanele şi toate organele societăţii, având această Declaraţie permanent în minte, să se străduiască ca prin învăţătură şi educaţie să promoveze respectul pentru aceste drepturi şi libertăţi şi să asigure prin măsuri progresive, naţionale şi internaţionale, recunoaşterea şi respectarea lor universală şi efectivă, atât în cadrul popoarelor Statelor Membre, cât şi al celor din teritoriile aflate sub jurisdicţia lor.


Articolul 1

Toate fiinţele umane se nasc libere şi egale în demnitate şi în drepturi.

Ele sunt înzestrate cu raţiune şi conştiinţă şi trebuie să se comporte unele faţă de altele în spiritul fraternităţii.


Articolul 2

Fiecare om are dreptul la toate drepturile şi libertăţile proclamate în prezenta Declaraţie fără nici un fel de deosebire ca, de exemplu, deosebirea de rasă, culoare, sex, limbă, religie, opinie politică sau orice altă opinie, de origine naţională sau socială, avere, naştere sau de orice alt statut pe care îl au.

În afară de aceasta, nu se va face nici o deosebire bazată pe statutul politic, juridic sau internaţional al ţării sau al teritoriului de care aparţine o persoană, fie că această ţară sau teritoriu sunt independente, sub tutelă, neautonome sau supuse vreunei alte limitări a suveranităţii lor.


Articolul 3

Orice fiinţă umană are dreptul la viaţă, la libertate şi la securitatea persoanei sale.


Articolul 4

Nimeni nu va fi ţinut în sclavie, nici în servitute; sclavajul şi comerţul cu sclavi sunt interzise sub toate formele lor.


Articolul 5

Nimeni nu va fi supus torturii, nici la pedepse sau tratamente crude, inumane sau degradante.

Articolul 6

Fiecare om are dreptul, ca oriunde, în faţa legii să-i fie recunoscută calitatea de persoană.


Articolul 7

Toţi oamenii sunt egali în faţa legii şi au, fără nici o deosebire, dreptul la protecţie egală din partea ei. Cu toţii au dreptul la protecţie egală împotriva oricărei discriminări care ar viola prezenta Declaraţie şi împotriva oricărei provocări la o astfel de discriminare.

Articolul 8

Orice persoană are dreptul la o remediere efectivă din partea instanţelor juridice naţionale competente împotriva acelor acte care violează drepturile fundamentale ce-i sunt recunoscute prin constituţie sau lege.


Articolul 9

Nimeni nu trebuie să fie arestat, deţinut sau exilat în mod arbitrar.


Articolul 10

Orice persoană este îndreptăţită a fi audiată în deplină egalitate, în mod echitabil şi public de către un tribunal independent şi imparţial care va hotărî fie asupra drepturilor şi obligaţiilor sale, fie asupra temeiniciei oricărei acuzări în materie penală îndreptată împotriva sa.


Articolul 11

1. Orice persoană acuzată de comiterea unui act cu caracter penal are dreptul să fie presupusă nevinovată până când vinovăţia sa va fi stabilită în acord cu legea, în cursul unui proces public în care i-au fost asigurate toate garanţiile necesare apărării sale.

2. Nimeni nu va fi condamnat pentru acţiuni sau omisiuni care nu constituiau, în momentul când au fost comise, un act cu caracter penal conform dreptului internaţional sau naţional. Articolul 12

Nimeni nu va fi supus la imixtiuni arbitrare în viaţa sa personală, în familia sa, în domiciliul lui sau în corespondenţa sa, nici la atingeri aduse onoarei şi reputaţiei sale. Orice persoană are dreptul la protecţia legii împotriva unor asemenea imixtiuni sau atingeri.

Articolul 13

1. Orice persoană are dreptul la liberă circulaţie şi rezidenţă în interiorul graniţelor oricărui stat.

2. Orice persoană are dreptul de a părăsi orice ţară, inclusiv a sa, şi de a reveni în ţara sa.


Articolul 14

1. În caz de persecuţie, orice persoană are dreptul de a căuta azil şi de a beneficia de azil în alte ţări.

Articolul 17

1. Orice persoană are dreptul la proprietate, atât singură, cât şi în asociaţie cu alţii.

2. Nimeni nu poate fi lipsit în mod arbitrar de proprietatea sa.

Articolul 18

Orice om are dreptul la libertatea gândirii, de conştiinţă şi religie; acest drept include libertatea de a-şi schimba religia sau convingerea, precum şi libertatea de a-şi manifesta religia sau convingerea, singur sau împreună cu alţii, atât în mod public, cât şi privat, prin învăţătură, practici religioase, cult şi ritualuri.


Articolul 19

Orice om are dreptul la libertatea opiniilor şi exprimării; acest drept include libertatea de a-şi forma opiniile, fără a fi forţat prin imixtiuni de vreun fel sau altul, precum şi libertatea de a căuta, de a primi şi de a răspândi informaţii şi idei prin orice mijloace media şi independent de frontierele de stat.


Articolul 20

1. Orice persoana are dreptul la libertatea de întrunire şi de asociere paşnică.

2. Nimeni nu poate fi silit să facă parte dintr-o asociaţie.


Articolul 21

1. Orice persoană are dreptul de a lua parte la conducerea treburilor publice ale ţării sale, fie direct, fie prin reprezentanţi liber aleşi.

2. Orice persoană are dreptul de acces egal la funcţiile publice din ţara sa.

3. Voinţa poporului trebuie să constituie baza autorităţii guvernului; această voinţă trebuie să fie exprimată prin alegeri nefalsificate, care să aibă loc în mod periodic prin sufragiu universal, egal şi exprimat prin vot secret sau printr-o procedură echivalentă care asigură libertatea votului.


Articolul 22

Orice persoană, în calitatea sa de membru al societăţii, are dreptul la securitate socială; ea este îndreptăţită ca prin efort naţional şi prin colaborare internaţională, ţinându-se seama de organizarea şi resursele fiecărei ţări, să obţină realizarea drepturilor economice, sociale şi culturale indispensabile pentru demnitatea sa şi libera dezvoltare a personalităţii sale.


Articolul 23

1. Orice persoană are dreptul la muncă, la libera alegere a muncii sale, la condiţii echitabile şi satisfăcătoare de muncă, precum şi la ocrotirea împotriva şomajului.

2. Toţi oamenii, fără nici o discriminare, au dreptul la salariu egal pentru muncă egală.

3. Orice om care munceşte are dreptul la o retribuire echitabilă şi satisfăcătoare care sa-i asigure atât lui, cât şi familiei sale, o existenţă conformă cu demnitatea umană şi care să fie completată, dacă este nevoie, prin alte mijloace de protecţie socială.

4. Orice persoană are dreptul de a înfiinţa sindicate şi de a se afilia la sindicate pentru apărarea intereselor sale.

Articolul 24

Orice persoană are dreptul la odihnă şi timp liber, inclusiv la o limitare rezonabilă a zilei de munca şi la concedii periodice plătite.


Articolul 25

1. Orice om are dreptul la un nivel de trai care să-i asigure sănătatea şi bunăstarea lui şi a familiei sale, cuprinzând hrana, îmbrăcămintea, locuinţa, îngrijirea medicală, precum şi serviciile sociale necesare; el are dreptul la asigurare în caz de şomaj, boală, invaliditate, văduvie, bătrâneţe sau în celelalte cazuri de pierdere a mijloacelor de subzistenţă, în urma unor împrejurări independente de voinţa sa.

2. Mama şi copilul au dreptul la ajutor şi ocrotire deosebite. Toţi copiii, fie că sunt născuţi în cadrul căsătoriei sau în afara acesteia, se bucură de aceeaşi protecţie socială.

Articolul 26

1. Orice persoană are dreptul la educaţie. Învăţământul trebuie sa fie gratuit, cel puţin în ceea ce priveşte învăţământul elementar şi general.

Învăţământul elementar trebuie sa fie obligatoriu. Învăţământul tehnic şi profesional trebuie sa fie la îndemâna tuturor, iar învăţământul superior trebuie sa fie de asemenea egal, accesibil tuturora, pe bază de merit.

2. Învăţământul trebuie să urmărească dezvoltarea deplină a personalităţii umane şi întărirea respectului faţă de drepturile omului şi libertăţile lui fundamentale.

El trebuie să promoveze înţelegerea, toleranţa şi prietenia între toate popoarele şi toate grupurile rasiale sau religioase, precum şi dezvoltarea activităţii Organizaţiei Naţiunilor Unite pentru menţinerea păcii.

3. Părinţii au dreptul de prioritate în alegerea felului de învăţământ pentru copiii lor minori.

Articolul 27

1. Orice persoană are dreptul de a lua parte în mod liber la viaţa culturală a colectivităţii, de a se bucura de arte şi de a participa la progresul ştiinţific şi la binefacerile lui.

2. Fiecare om are dreptul la ocrotirea intereselor morale şi materiale care decurg din orice lucrare ştiinţifică, literară sau artistică al cărei autor este.


Articolul 28

Orice persoană are dreptul la o orânduire socială şi internaţională în care drepturile şi libertăţile expuse în prezenta Declaraţie pot fi pe deplin înfăptuite.


Articolul 29

1. Orice persoană are îndatoriri faţă de colectivitate, deoarece numai în cadrul acesteia este posibilă dezvoltarea liberă şi deplină a personalităţii sale.

2. PREAMBLE

Article 1.

  • All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

Article 2.

  • Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty.

Article 3.

  • Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.

Article 4.

  • No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.

Article 5.

  • No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

Article 6.

  • Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law.

Article 7.

  • All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination.

Article 8.

  • Everyone has the right to an effective remedy by the competent national tribunals for acts violating the fundamental rights granted him by the constitution or by law.

Article 9.

  • No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile.

Article 10.

  • Everyone is entitled in full equality to a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal, in the determination of his rights and obligations and of any criminal charge against him.

Article 11.

  • (1) Everyone charged with a penal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a public trial at which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defence.
  • (2) No one shall be held guilty of any penal offence on account of any act or omission which did not constitute a penal offence, under national or international law, at the time when it was committed. Nor shall a heavier penalty be imposed than the one that was applicable at the time the penal offence was committed.

Article 12.

  • No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.

Article 13.

  • (1) Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state.
  • (2) Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.

Article 14.

  • (1) Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.
  • (2) This right may not be invoked in the case of prosecutions genuinely arising from non-political crimes or from acts contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations.

Article 15.

  • (1) Everyone has the right to a nationality.
  • (2) No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his nationality nor denied the right to change his nationality.

Article 16.

  • (1) Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family. They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution.
  • (2) Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses.
  • (3) The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State.

Article 17.

  • (1) Everyone has the right to own property alone as well as in association with others.
  • (2) No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his property.

Article 18.

  • Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.

Article 19.

  • Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

Article 20.

  • (1) Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association.
  • (2) No one may be compelled to belong to an association.

Article 21.

  • (1) Everyone has the right to take part in the government of his country, directly or through freely chosen representatives.
  • (2) Everyone has the right of equal access to public service in his country.
  • (3) The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures.

Article 22.

  • Everyone, as a member of society, has the right to social security and is entitled to realization, through national effort and international co-operation and in accordance with the organization and resources of each State, of the economic, social and cultural rights indispensable for his dignity and the free development of his personality.

Article 23.

  • (1) Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favourable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment.
  • (2) Everyone, without any discrimination, has the right to equal pay for equal work.
  • (3) Everyone who works has the right to just and favourable remuneration ensuring for himself and his family an existence worthy of human dignity, and supplemented, if necessary, by other means of social protection.
  • (4) Everyone has the right to form and to join trade unions for the protection of his interests.

Article 24.

  • Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay.

Article 25.

  • (1) Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.
  • (2) Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance. All children, whether born in or out of wedlock, shall enjoy the same social protection.

Article 26.

  • (1) Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit.
  • (2) Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of the United Nations for the maintenance of peace.
  • (3) Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children.

Article 27.

  • (1) Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits.
  • (2) Everyone has the right to the protection of the moral and material interests resulting from any scientific, literary or artistic production of which he is the author.

Article 28.

  • Everyone is entitled to a social and international order in which the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration can be fully realized.

Article 29.

  • (1) Everyone has duties to the community in which alone the free and full development of his personality is possible.
  • (2) In the exercise of his rights and freedoms, everyone shall be subject only to such limitations as are determined by law solely for the purpose of securing due recognition and respect for the rights and freedoms of others and of meeting the just requirements of morality, public order and the general welfare in a democratic society.
  • (3) These rights and freedoms may in no case be exercised contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations.

Article 30.

  • Nothing in this Declaration may be interpreted as implying for any State, group or person any right to engage in any activity or to perform any act aimed at the destruction of any of the rights and freedoms set forth herein.

Ceremonies of Opening a Lodge of Entered Apprentice Masons.

One rap calls the Lodge to order; one calls up the Junior and Senior Deacons; two raps call up the subordinate officers; and three, all the members of the Lodge.

The Master having called the Lodge to order, and the officers all seated, the Master says to the Junior Warden,

"Brother Junior, are they all Entered Apprentice Masons in the South?"

He answers, "They are, Worshipful."

Master to the Senior Warden, "Brother Senior, are they all Entered Apprentice Masons in the West?" He answers, "They are, Worshipful."

The Master then says, "They are in the East;" at the same time he gives a rap with the common gavel, or mallet, which calls up both Deacons.

Master to Junior Deacon, "Attend to that part of your duty, and inform the Tyler that we are about to open a Lodge of Entered Apprentice Masons; and direct him to tyle accordingly."

The Tyler then steps to the door and gives three raps, which are answered by three from without; the Junior Deacon then gives one, which is also answered by the Tyler with one; the door is then partly opened, and the Junior Deacon delivers his message and resumes his situation, and says,

"The door is tyled, Worshipful" (at the same time giving the due-guard, which is never omitted when the Master is addressed).

The Master to the Junior Deacon, "By whom?" He answers, "By a Master Mason without the door, armed with the proper implements of his office." Master to the Junior Deacon, "His duty there?"

He answers, "To keep off all cowans and eave-droppers, see that none pass or repass without permission from the Master." [Some say without permission from the chair.]

Master to Junior Deacon, "Brother Junior, your place in the Lodge?" He answers, "At the right hand of the Senior Warden in the West."

Master to Junior Deacon, "Your business there, Brother Junior?" He answers, "To wait on the Worshipful Master and Wardens, act as their proxy in the active duties of the Lodge, and take charge of the door."

Master to Junior Deacon, "The Senior Deacon's place in the Lodge?" He answers, "At the right hand of the Worshipful Master in the East." [The Master, while asking the last question, gives two raps, which call up all the subordinate officers.]

Master to Senior Deacon, "Your duty there, Brother Senior?" He answers, "To wait on the Worshipful Master and Wardens, act as their proxy in the active duties of the Lodge, attend to the preparation and introduction of candidates—and welcome and clothe all visiting brethren." [i.e., furnish them with an apron.]

Master to Senior Deacon, "The Secretary's place in the Lodge, Brother Senior?" He answers, "At the left hand of the Worshipful Master in the East."

Master to the Secretary, "Your duty [Pg 4]there, Brother Secretary?" He answers, "The better to observe the Worshipful Master's will and pleasure, record the proceedings of the Lodge; transmit a copy of the same to the Grand Lodge, if required; receive all moneys and money-bills from the hands of the brethren, pay them over to the Treasurer, and take his receipt for the same."

The Master to the Secretary, "The Treasurer's place in the Lodge?" He answers, "At the right hand of the Worshipful Master."

Master to the Treasurer, "Your duty there, Brother Treasurer?" He answers, "Duly to observe the Worshipful Master's will and pleasure; receive all moneys and money-bills from the hands of the Secretary; keep a just and true account of the same; pay them out by order of the Worshipful Master and consent of the brethren."

The Master to the Treasurer, "The Junior Warden's place in the Lodge, Brother Treasurer?" He answers, "In the South, Worshipful."

Master to Junior Warden, "Your business there, Brother Junior?"

He answers, "As the sun in the South at high meridian, is the beauty and glory of the day, so stands the Junior Warden in the South the better to observe the time; call the crafts from labor to refreshment; superintend them during the hours thereof; see that none convert the hours of refreshment into that of intemperance or excess; and call them on again in due season, that the Worshipful Master may have honor, and they pleasure and profit thereby."

Master to the Junior Warden, "The Senior Warden's place in the Lodge?" He answers, "In the West, Worshipful."

Master to the Senior Warden, "Your duty there, Brother Senior?" He answers, "As the sun sets in the West, to close the day, so stands the Senior Warden in the West, to assist the Worshipful Master in opening his Lodge; take care of the jewels and implements; see that none be lost; pay the craft their wages, if any be due; and see that none go away dissatisfied."

Master to the Senior Warden, "The Master's place in the Lodge?" He answers, "In the East, Worshipful."

Master to the Senior Warden, "His duty there?" He answers, "As the sun rises in the East to open and adorn the day, so presides the Worshipful Master in the East to open and adorn his Lodge; set his crafts to work with good and wholesome laws, or cause the same to be done."

The Master now gives three raps, when all the brethren rise, and the Master, taking off his hat, proceeds as follows: "In like manner so do I, strictly forbidding all profane language, private committees, or any other disorderly conduct whereby the peace and harmony of this Lodge may be interrupted while engaged in its lawful pursuits, under no less penalty than the by-laws, or such penalty as a majority of the brethren present may see fit to inflict.

Brethren, attend to giving the signs." [Here Lodges differ very much. In some they declare the Lodge open, as follows, before they give the sign.] The Master (all the brethren imitating him) extends his left arm from his body, so as to form an angle of about forty-five degrees, and holds his right hand traversely across his left, the palms thereof one inch apart.

This is called the first sign of a Mason—is the sign of distress in this degree, and alludes to the position a candidate's hands are placed in when he takes the obligation of an Entered Apprentice Mason. The Master then draws his right hand across his throat, the hand open, with the thumb [Pg 5]next to the throat, and drops it down by his side.

This is called the due-guard of an Entered Apprentice Mason (many call it the sign), and alludes to the penalty of an obligation. The Master then declares the Lodge opened in the following manner:—"I now declare the Lodge of Entered Apprentice Masons duly opened for the dispatch of business." The Senior Warden declares it to the Junior Warden, and he to the brethren. "Come, brethren, let us pray."

Prayer.—Most holy and glorious God! the great Architect of the Universe: the giver of all good gifts and graces. Thou hast promised that "Where two or three are gathered together in Thy name, Thou wilt be in the midst of them, and bless them." In Thy name we assemble, most humbly beseeching Thee to bless us in all our undertakings, that we may know and serve Thee aright, and that all our actions may tend to Thy glory, and our advancement in knowledge and virtue. And we beseech Thee, O Lord God, to bless our present assembling; and to illumine our minds through the influence of the Son of Righteousness, that we may walk in the Light of Thy countenance; and when the trials of our probationary state are over, be admitted into the temple not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Amen. So mote it be.

Another Prayer.—Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard, that went down to the skirts of his garments; as the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountain of Zion, for there the Lord commanded the blessing, evermore. Amen. So mote it be. [This prayer is likewise used on closing the Lodge.]

The Lodge being now open and ready to proceed to business, the Master directs the Secretary to read the minutes of the last meeting, which naturally brings to view the business of the present. If there are any candidates to be brought forward, that is the first business attended to.[1]

Declaratie de Principii în 8 puncte:

1. Francmasoneria este o societate iniţiatică umanistă şi hermeneutică întemeiată pe ideea de fraternitate.

2. Oricine poate deveni mason dacă este un Om Liber şi de bune moravuri.

3. Francmasonii numesc realitatea ultimă, cu apelativul de „Marele Arhitect al Universului”. Ei caută să facă paşi concreţi spre nemurire.

4. Jurământul se depune pe Cartea Legii Sacre considerată ca atare de fiecare mason. Pentru profani această carte este Biblia, Coranul, Torah, BaghavadGita, Tripitaka, ...

5. Francmasoneria are ca scop perfecţionarea de sine şi perfeţionarea societăţii omeneşti precum şi cunoaşterea, practicarea şi dezvoltarea moralei şi eticii universale.

6. Francmasoneria nu promovează discriminarea bazată pe rasă, sex, convingeri politice şi religioase.

7. Francmasoneria este un ordin iniţiatic.

8. Orice discuţie pe teme politice şi religioase trebuie să se facă cu respect reciproc şi într-un cadru fratern.
